Romance isn't dead... it's just been a little unwell. I hate romantic comedies...really hate them. I'd heard that "Love Actually" was a 'good' romantic comedy, but I still approached it with caution. And I was pleasantly surprised. Lots of little 'love' stories all intertwined show the many facets of modern relationships and dating. And while is does have a fair amount of cheesy OTT romantic moments it also contains enough touches of realism to keep it watchable. Hugh Grant plays Hugh Grant playing PM and proves along with Colin Firth and Andrew Lincoln that Brit men are suave, sexy and romantic. I'd have to say that the bit where Andrew Lincoln's character declares his love for the disgustingly thin Keira Knightley via writing has to be one of the most romantic things I have ever seen! However if Martine McCutcheon is plump I must be clinically obese! Overall it is not the best film you will ever see, but considering the talent involved (hats off to Emma Thompson) and the quality of writing and storytelling it is well worth a look. The only thing that annoyed me was the fact that it seemed to rely too heavily on the fact that swearing is funny, and swearing posh people are hilarious...but what the fuck do I know?! |
