The last humans are living in a heavily guarded walled city, where the rich and poor divide is still in full effect. Outside the zombies are evolving and soon the divisions within the city open up the perfect opportunity for a zombie attack. Nobody makes zombie films like Romero. Many try and many fail. They just don't have the brrrraaaaaaains...ahem, by that I mean they don't have an intelligent storyline. For Romero the zombies are walking metaphors, his films have always been top-notch social commentaries, rather than mindless horror movies. That said, Romero's films are never boring or too heavy going and always deliver the gore. Land of the Dead has been one of the most eagerly awaited films and thankfully it doesn't disappoint. As with Day of the Dead you have an uneasy sympathy for the zombies as humanity becomes less humane. There may have been a few good zombie films recently but no one beats Romero. If you know his work you'll love it, if not watch it and see how intellectual a horror film can be. |
