Horror films you must see…before you die!

“The Shinning” Kubrick directs Jack Nicholson in an absorbing and atmospheric film.

“Poltergeist” Slightly marred by the touch of maestro Spielberg and his love of the family unit. But an effective shocker from Tobe Hooper nonetheless.

“Halloween” Masterpiece…but avoid the unnecessary sequels.

“Carnival of Souls” Little known black and white film from 1962. Directed by Herk Harvey. Potent and atmospheric, one of the few films to genuinely scare me when I first saw it.

“Evil Dead 2” Not really a sequel in my eyes, more of a re-make made on the success of the first. Raimi shows horror has a sense of humour.

“The Haunting” Of Course I mean the original! Proves you don’t need flashy special effects to scare an audience.

“Cat people” Again, only watch the original. An interesting film that has so many levels. Seen now an exploration of female sexuality.

“Freaks” Directed by Tod Browning, who also did the seminal Bela Lugosi “Dracula”. Banned for many years, due to the cast of real ‘freaks’. An amazing and disturbing film.

“Shivers” Early David Cronenberg film. Mad scientist invents parasite that once inside the body, turns people into sex-crazed maniacs, parasite gets released into an apartment complex…all hell breaks loose. And Barbara Steel is in it.

“Living Dead Trilogy” Racism, them and us, mind numbing consumerism, scientific and military control…and you thought it was just Zombies!

“Texas Chainsaw Massacre” A truly shocking film, which is still as potent as when it was first released. Again, avoid the unnecessary sequels.
