Amazingly people who don't speak English make films too, and here's the best

"Bicycle Thieves"
In post war poverty stricken Italy an unemployed man is finally given a break and is offered a job putting up posters around the city, the only condition being he has a bicycle. As you may guess from the title, the bicycle (which was bought with the money from pawning the bed sheets) is stolen and this film follows the attempts of the man and his son to recover the stolen bike. An Incredibly simple but ultimately powerful film, with possibly one of the best acting performances by a child.

"Women on the verge of a nervous breakdown"
Pepa’s lover has left her, but has he gone back to his wife? Pepa wants to speak to him one last time and find out the truth. As if this wasn’t bad enough her best friend has unwittingly been hiding terrorists! This is an excellent exaggerated farce from Almodovar

"The Gospel according to St Matthew"
A Pasolini masterpiece shot very much like a documentary, following Christ. Pasolini portrays Christ a revolutionary figure, wrestling with the choices he has to make and the immense power he has. Amazing cinematography.

"The Virgin Spring"
An amazingly poignant Bergman/ Von Sydow collaboration, filled with subtly and atmosphere. While on religious Pilgrimage Tore’s daughter is raped and murdered. Shortly after three men seek shelter on his farm, and to his horror Tore realizes he has been harbouring his own daughter’s killers. An intense allegory of Christian values and forgiveness.

"The Cremator"
A creepy, genuinely chilling Czechoslovakian gothic tale about the owner of a crematorium. A man obsessed with reincarnation, death and purification of the soul for another life. A deeply unbalanced man who eventually becomes drawn into working for the Nazi’s.

"Run Lola Run"
Lola’s boyfriend is in with a bad crowd, and has lost the money he smuggled into the country for them. In a desperate race to save him from the wrath of the gang Lola must come up with the money. Wonderfully inventive German film, showing all the possibilities of one situation.

"La Strada"
Sold to Zampano, a fairground wrestler by her poor mother, Gelsomina is forced into following him as he travels. Eventually she meets and falls in love with “The Fool” but begins to suspect Zampano loves her. Wonderful performances from both Giulietta Masina as the childlike and Chaplinesque Gelsomina and Anthony Quinn as the brutish Zampano.

"Man Bites Dog"
A documentary film crew follow and film a serial killer as he goes about his ‘business’, waffling on about life, art and killing people. I don’t like this film; it is the only film that has made me physically sick. However, I am including it because it is nonetheless a very powerful film and unfortunately it does say a lot about the nature of modern media. You’ll probably see a real life version of this on Channel 4 soon.

"Ringu"
I don’t think I can praise this Japanese horror film enough. I have seen it countless times, I even wrote an essay on it and despite all that its power has not diminished. You watch a creepy video and a week later you die. A television set will never seem innocent again after you see this.

"Chungking Express"
A tale of two police officers seeking love in a lonely city. A delightfully eccentric look at romance. Touching and funny, with some great performances. The kind of film that makes you want to break into someone’s house and rearrange their furniture.

"The Vanishing"
While on holiday a young couple, Rex and Saskia stop at a service station. Saskia disappears and Rex vows to never give up searching. A glimpse into the mind of a serial killer, and what a glimpse it is. This is Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu’s film, he is absolutely pitch perfect as the cold calculating killer who plans and carries out horrific crimes while simultaneously playing the perfect husband and father. Don’t bother with the Hollywood remake as the ‘happy’ American ending ruins the film.

"City of God"
This film shows the path of two boys growing up the run down and violent slum area of Rio de Janeiro; one becomes a criminal and the other a photographer. Based on real events and using real kids from the slum area, this a shocking and expertly rendered film that shows the endless cycle of violence and ignorance that is inherent in areas like this and how people can rise above it

"Delicatessen"
In a bleak Post-Apocalyptical (I hate that term when used in relation to film normally) world food is in short supply, but in one apartment block above a butchers the landlord has come up with a novel way of finding fresh meat. However when the new hired help falls in love with the butcher’s daughter this causes a few problems for the butcher who had other ideas as to his use. A film of many genre’s and outstanding visuals
