Charlie Kauffman writes the bizarre like no else can and with “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”, Michel Gondry proves that he has the ability to bring it to the screen. Following bitter dissolution of their relationship Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) and Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet) both undergo a procedure that promises to erase them from each other’s memories giving them a fresh start. However, as Barish begins the process it rekindles the love for Clementine he thought that was gone for good. Visually I adored this film. Gondry is best known for music videos, and his ability to stun the viewer continues into this full-length feature. Many scenes are so delightfully constructed that they are a pleasure to watch on their own as well as part of the film. Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, two actors who never really got me rushing to the cinema before, both excel in this film. Physically Carrey looks so withered and drawn that you feel an instant pity towards him, but also a kind of repulsion at his vulnerability. Winslet too, gives a fine performance, portraying Clementine as a character with almost schizophrenic depths, that seem played out in her ever changing hair colours. Modern romance? Tragi-comedy? Whatever it is, its well worth seeing. |
