Shaun of the Dead

Edgar Wright 2004

Homage, pastiche, parody. All words I just looked up in the dictionary and all words that apply to this brilliant gem of a film.

If having relationship problems wasn’t enough to severely dampen Shaun’s spirits, a sudden influx of the living dead surely is. However Shaun has a plan and aided by his less than helpful friend Ed, played with comic perfection by Nick Frost, he sets out to rescue the girl he loves.

Anyone who was a fan of “Spaced” knows that Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright packed more film references into that series that anyone could have thought possible. What was also evident in “Spaced” and what is very clear in “Shaun of the Dead” is a deep, deep love of film. Rather than the snide mocking tones of something like “Scary Movie” this film warmly hugs the Zombie theme and gives us a deliciously eccentric and very British take on one of the staple themes of the horror genre.

Hilarious, romantic, gory and touching what more could you ask for from a film. Forget the discovery of Gravity and invention of Penicillin and the Telephone; it is films like these that make me truly proud to be British
