Lovely Fluffy Romantic Films…awww bless!

“Brief Encounter” My all time favourite film in the world…ever! A David Lean classic from 1945. After a chance meeting at a railway station a bored housewife begins an affair with an enigmatic Doctor. Possibly the most effective use of music in a film, Rachmaninov’s 2nd Piano Concerto matches perfectly the highs and lows of this emotionally charged film. This film is far from idyllic and the tragedy of this doomed romance sets it apart. Simply breath-taking. “Nothing lasts really. Neither happiness nor despair. Not even life lasts very long”

“Casablanca” Voted the greatest love story of all time by The American Film Institute. Like ‘Brief Encounter’ this a love story tinged with great sadness and great sacrifice. The acting is superb and it is a joy to watch. “Kiss me. Kiss me as if it were the last time”

“Bubble Boy” A young man born without an immune system spends his life inside a plastic bubble in his bedroom. He falls in love with the girl next door, but she leaves to marry another…so he builds himself a mobile bubble and sets out to find her. Erm...did I mention this was a comedy?! Jake Gyllenhaal breathes life into this romantic comedy that insults anyone and everyone. A much better film than you may first think. “I'd rather spend one minute holding you than a lifetime knowing I never could”

“An Affair to Remember” A couple, already engaged to other people, meet and fall in love. They agree to meet again in six months time atop the Empire State building. But fate conspires against them. Cary Grant proves that he is the King of suave, in a film that is the epitome of the term ‘tearjerker’. “It’s nobody's fault but my own! I was looking up... it was the nearest thing to heaven! You were there…”

“Annie Hall” Possibly Woody Allen’s best film. Plotting the course of a neurotic romance during the 1970’s, a simple story but brilliantly done. Hilarious and touching.
“This guy goes to a psychiatrist and says, "Doc, my brother's crazy. He thinks he's a chicken." And, the doctor says, "Well, why don't you turn him in?" And the guy says, "I would, but I need the eggs." Well, I guess that's pretty much how I feel about relationships. Y'know, they're totally irrational and crazy and absurd but, I guess we keep going through it because, most of us need the eggs”

“It Happened One Night” The original screwball comedy. A mismatched couple who, whether they like it or not, need each other, fall in love as they embark on an adventure to find their way back to the socialites new husband. Clark Gable is irascible and hilarious and Claudette Colbert is feisty beyond belief in this well deserved Oscar winning film."I asked you a simple question! Do you love her? YES!! But don't hold that against me, I'm a little screwy myself!"

“Bonnie and Clyde” Possibly an odd choice for a list of romantic films. Small town girl meets small time criminal and they begin a crime spree and love affair that shocked depression era America. Heavily stylized and with glossy view of history, this film shows us crimes of passion aplenty. “This here's Miss Bonnie Parker. I'm Clyde Barrow. We rob banks”

“Moulin Rouge” A funny, tragic, song filled extravaganza. Shows that love and music go hand in hand. “Love? Above all things I believe in love. Love is like oxygen. Love is a many-splendored thing, love lifts us up where we belong, all you need is love”.

“Edward Scissorhands” A modern fairytale and like all good Love Stories, tinged with sadness. Superb acting from all involved, again proving Burton has an eye for the bizarre. “Before he came down here, it never snowed. And afterwards, it did. I don't think it would be snowing now if he weren't still up there. Sometimes you can still catch me dancing in it”
