In the small Indian town of Amritsar Mrs. Bakshi has high hopes of finding wealthy husbands for her four daughters. When rich single Balraj expresses an interest all seems well until he arrives with his friend Mr. Darcy. Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice gets a Hollywood/Bollywood revamp, proving that class, social standing and money are still on everyone's mind and that first impressions are often wrong. I must admit as the first song and dance number began I sank a little lower in my seat and cringed. But there's something about the vibrant colours, the energy and the simple story that really sucks you in and as cynical and bitter as I am I couldn't help but like it. It's not a masterpiece of modern cinema but it passes the time nicely enough. |
